April 15, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Dedicated hosting provider The Planet (theplanet.com) announced on Tuesday it has released a new white paper that analyzes the varying business benefits of dedicated hosting and colocation services for SMB companies.

The colocation versus dedicated hosting issue has been widely debated, and the release of this brief, entitled "Dedicated Servers or Colocation: Which Is Best for Your Hosted IT?", further explores the costs of colocation compared to on-demand dedicated hosting.

Given the fact that this report is being published by The Planet, a dedicated Web host itself, signifies a particular agenda in promoting dedicated hosting service. That said, the report accurately evaluates the costs involved in a typical colocation scenario, which includes setting up, configuring, maintaining and updating servers, staffing and travel costs incurred by IT experts who are required to travel to the colocation site for repairs in the event of a hardware or software failure.

The report then compares this to dedicated hosting from The Planet, which it says provides a scalable IT infrastructure with round the clock support, rapid server deployment, customized server applications and an uptime guarantee.

According to the report, colocation is a less-than-optimal solution for SMB customers because of its associated cost of purchasing hardware and in-house staffing, along with the limited response time to solve problems.
