April 4, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- A North Potomac, Maryland man has sold 'pizza.com' for a whopping $2.6 million this week in an online auction run by domain online marketplace, Sedo (sedo.com).
Level 1 PCI DSS Certified Service Provider! DataPipe delivers the best network & support; top tier data centers; New York metro, Silicon Valley, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai. DataPipe - Personal Touch, Global Reach.
The domain received the highest bid from an anonymous bidder when the auction closed Thursday after its week-long run.
Chris Clark, 42, registered the domain in 1994 and had been maintaining it since then for $20 a year. Clark managed to snag the domain at time when the World Wide Web was just getting underway, in an attempt to secure a contract with a pizza company for his consulting firm.
He eventually sold his business in 2000 but continued paying the $20 annual maintenance fee for the domain and used the address to generate ad revenue.
With the help of a friend, he turned the site into a pizza directory last year, earning them over $5,000 before they decided to sell the name online in January. Inspired by the online sale of vodka.com for $3 million through Sedo, Clark placed pizza.com in the online auction site.
The domain name's value skyrocketed from its first day bid of $100 to $1 million the following day on March 28.
For more than five years, Sedo has offered a global domain name marketplace and a range of domain name services. The company says it provides users with the tools they need to buy and sell domains among a global community of users, including domain appraisals, brokerage services, promotion and its domain parking program.
