April 3, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Data center operator and hosting provider Terremark Worldwide (terremark.com) reported on Thursday that its Terremark Federal Group subsidiary would be working with the Library of Congress to host the institution's new website, which launches April 12.
To be located at myLOC.gov, the website will be the companion to the new Library of Congress Experience, which launches the same time at the facility itself - the largest library in the world, with "over 138 items on more than 650 miles of shelves."
In an announcement on its website (loc.gov) the organization explains, possibly overusing the word "interactive," that the new exhibit will include "interactive kiosks" that will enable visitors to virtually handle artifacts such as the Gutenberg Bible. Information about the event is currently available on a mini-site within the LOC website.
The Experience will also invite participation in the form of creative works such as stories, poems, video, audio and photos, submitted via electronic files.
Amusingly, the LOC's own press release seemed not to acknowledge the irony in a library announcing the availability of "interactive technology" that will "put a world of knowledge at [our] fingertips."
Terremark says the site will employ its Highly Managed Hosting service, which focuses on support and high availability. The Library of Congress is reportedly expecting more than 3 million new user accounts on the site within a year, with millions of visitors to the physical kiosks in the building, promising a big job for Terremark's hosting service.
"Technology and interaction with historical artifacts are crucial to engaging the imagination and critical-thinking skills of young people," says James H. Billington, librarian of congress, in the Terremark press release, "which is why this partnership with Terremark is so important to our mission of making our unparalleled collections more broadly accessible and creating lifelong learners."
