The new facility will meet the demand of its local small- and medium-sized businesses for greater IT support by housing and managing mission critical computer server hardware and software assets in the province. Primus has added 12 sales employees and five network staff in Edmonton, as well as seven sales employees in Calgary.
"Our SMB customers have told us that in order to stay competitive, they need to avoid a crisis of complexity -- too many IT options and not enough clarity," says AJ Byers, senior VP of Primus Business Services. "With Alberta's economy growing so quickly SMBs need complete solutions that allow them to focus on their core business."
The Western Canadian province of Alberta has seen a significant economic boom in the past few years, which is largely attributed to the great increase in oil and gas prices. This has led to unprecedented levels of capital investment in the province, which in turn has created growth in many industry areas including IT and managed services. SMBs, in particular, account for 97.7 percent of businesses in Canada.
In its first phase, the new data center has 4,000 square feet of raised floor space with options for an eighth, quarter, half, full-sized and custom cages for colocation space. The facility resides in an unmarked location with a single entrance and a two-stage credential entry process supported with a biometric security system, card access control and individually locked cabinets for uncompromised security.
The facility also employs environmentally friendly features and design elements to reduce its environmental footprint, delivering power in multiple configurations to maximize server power efficiency. Highly efficient UPS equipment and transformers help reduce energy consumption by minimizing energy waste, while its provisioning practices balance loads across phases of power to reduce overdraw.
Primus Business Services says it provides advanced voice communications, data center infrastructure and managed information technology solutions to the small and medium sized business market. As a division of Primus Canada, Primus Business Services uses a national network for voice and data services and a telecom infrastructure, operating data centers in Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto, London and Edmonton.
