March 27, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Australia's domain name administrator .au Domain Administration (auda.org.au) announced last week it has called for public comment on domain monetization--the practice of registering numerous domain names in an effort to sell click-through advertising.
The .au Domain Administration is considering whether domain monetization should be considered legitimate when registering Australian domain names, as reported by the ZDNet Australia in early December.
auDA CEO Chris Disspain says that while his organization is not completely against domain monetization, it would like to know whether Internet users are okay with this practice taking place under the .au domain name system.
While domain monetization is widespread throughout North America and Europe, it is a relatively new practice for the young .au domain name. Organizations in Australia must have a "close and substantial" connection with a domain name to be validated for registration, such as a registered business name or trademark.
