The office of inspector general Glenn Fine reported on Wednesday that the FBI mistakingly counted the number of subpoenas it served on the Web hosts instead of the actual child pornography websites that were shut down.
Fine's office performed the audit to determine "whether DOJ is accurately and completely collecting, storing, validating, and verifying the key indicator data." The audit found deficiencies in nine of 21 key indicators used by the US Justice Department to assess its annual progress in reaching strategic goals.
Other findings include the Justice Department's inaccurate reporting of the percent of civil and criminal cases that were favorably resolved, as well as its improper assessment of the decrease in homicides per site attributed to the Weed and Seed Program.
The Justice Department's key indicators are highlighted in the Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2003-2008.
