March 5, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to a report posted by DataCenterKnowledge online auction site eBay (ebay.com) is looking for a new site for a data center and seems to be focusing on locations in Southwestern United States like Phoenix, Arizona and Utah.
According to reports, the facility could be as large as 250,000 square feet and would continue eBay's regional expansion, which already includes a large data center in Phoenix and a recent expansion at its Denver, Colorado facility. The company is believed to currently have six data centers, including facilities in San Jose and Sacramento, California and Austin, Texas.
Ebay's last network expansion was in 2006, when it bought the former Switch-X data center in Phoenix for $16.3 million. At the time, the company said the location's low exposure to natural disasters was an important factor, which is why it may be looking at that area again for expansion. As for Utah, which hasn't been known for housing huge data centers, the area has slowly been becoming home to a growing number of Web hosts and enterprise data centers and has even been attributed to leading the nation in "economic dynamism."
It is also believed that eBay is focusing on the Southwest because of its network requirements and that too much distance between the eBay data centers could lead to latency, which would be problematic considering the nature of eBay's online business.
