March 5, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet infrastructure services provider VeriSign (verisign.com) announced on Wednseday it has published its Q4 2007 Domain Name Industry Brief, which reveals that the Internet grew by nearly 33 million domain names in 2007.
At the close of the year, there was a total base of more than 153 million domain name registrations worldwide across all of the top level domains - a 27 percent increase over the same quarter last year, and five percent growth over Q3 2007. Meanwhile, the .com and .net adjusted base surpassed 80.4 million domain name registrations at the end of 2007 - a 24 percent increase year over year and a four percent increase quarter over quarter.
Country Code TLD registrations topped more than 58 million, a 33 percent increase from 2006 and a six percent increase from Q3 2007. The composition of the domain name industry and rank order in terms of base size remained relatively constant.
"The widespread adoption of Internet-enabled wireless devices and gaming consoles has created a growing demand for larger IP address space," says Raynor Dahlquist, senior VP of naming services at VeriSign. "To stay ahead of this demand, VeriSign recently took steps to enable the A and J root servers for IPv6. This will help ensure that developing global infrastructures will have sufficient IP address space to innovate, to enhance the end-to-end connectivity for IPv6 networks, and to facilitate richer use of DNS."
VeriSign announced last week it has launched a new viral marketing campaign that offers a humorous approach to abandoned shopping carts.
