Developed by Parallels, the APS standard is designed to simplify integration of Web applications into hosting environments for delivery as software as a service solutions. The packaging format enables service providers to deliver hosted applications developed by independent software vendors, in which APS-certified applications can be easily "plugged" into hosting platforms that conform to the standard.
"Adoption of the APS standard will provide a sizeable new business opportunity for 1&1 and for the entire Web hosting and software industries worldwide," says Andreas Gauger, chairman of 1&1 Internet. "The standard is open to everyone and will provide exciting new sales channels for hosting providers as well as other Internet service providers. Our customers and ISVs will benefit from the expected growth of new APS-compliant applications."
The new service includes open source applications, such as Joomla, PostNuke, PhpBB, SMF, Serendipity, Moodle, MediaWiki, Mantis, phpMyVisites, PHProject and WebCalendar. 1&1's German hosting customers will also receive the Click-n-Build control panel. The company previously deployed APS-certified applications to its US customers last June.
