Go Daddy Becomes Largest Web Host

February 13, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet research organization Netcraft (netcraft.com) reported last week that Web hosting provider Go Daddy (godaddy.com) had surpassed 1&1 Internet (oneandone.com) as the world's largest Web host, it's January gain of 255,000 hostnames bringing it to 5,544,296 in total, about 95,000 more than 1&1 according to Netcraft's Hosting Provider Switching Analysis.

According to Netcraft, 1&1 had held the largest number of hostnames since the Switching Analysis was introduced in early 2003.

The report from Netcraft came as Go Daddy ran a Super Bowl ad for the second time in as many years. The researcher says the success of Go Daddy's ad in the previous game was evidenced by a year-long surge in growth, with the company adding 2.5 million hostnames since January 2005.

Most of those additions, says Netcraft, are domain registrations. While a limited source of income in themselves, however, domains often serve as a gateway into more significant investments, such as Web hosting and SSL Certificates.

In the 12 months since the 2005 Super Bowl, Go Daddy has added 523,825 active sites. During the year, the company has been much more active in its mainstream advertising, a campaign that it kicked off with the first Super Bowl ad.

Netcraft says that hostname numbers tend to fluctuate, and that those fluctuations could put 1&1 Internet back on top in the coming months.

Last week, Go Daddy said its 2006 Super Bowl ad had generated a significant spike in traffic.
