November 10, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- In the past couple years the Web hosting industry has seen a resurgence of virtual private servers, particularly because they provide a level of customization that cannot be fulfilled by a shared hosting solution. As a result, Web hosts are continually enhancing their VPS offerings to ensure that they meet the changing needs of their customers.

This week, Web hosting and managed services provider Verio (verio.com) did just that when it announced the third generation of its FreeBSD-based Virtual Private Server solution, updating the solution to improve server efficiency and support for the newest technologies.
In its latest version of the VPS, Verio has introduced updates to core applications and enhanced support for a range of technologies that targets the hosted solution to businesses with limited IT staff resources and developer companies.
"We've taken our 10 years of virtualization experience and VPS servers, and we have updated the operating system and updated the core applications," says Andrea Lewis, VPS product manager for Verio. "For example, we have [upgraded to] PHP 5.1.5 and MySQL 5.0.24. Bringing all of that together, we have brought the most secure, flexible and fastest VPS server to date."
The hosted solution offers end-users a fully isolated system with all the functionality of a dedicated server in a virtualized and fully managed environment. Verio manages all security updates and backups and offers all VPS customers free live support.
Additionally, customers have access to the vinstall tool, which enables them to easily add programs or utilities to their virtual private server. Users can also choose from a wide selection of preconfigured vinstalls, such as MySQL and Urchin Web analytics software, without having to manually configure them.
"Customers have been saying that the [updated] vinstall tool saves them time," says Lewis. "Customers have said they don't need to worry about maintaining the core applications, because we maintain them."
Finally, customers will benefit from the VPS plans' increased disk space, FreeBSD 6.0 upgrade, Apache 2.2.3, Sendmail Real-time Blacklist and PHP 5.1.5, which adds new extensions and improved support for popular technologies such as XML, SOAP and MySQL.
One of Verio's VPS customers, correspondent.tv, is a Web-based service that links TV correspondents with television service providers in foreign countries. The new VPS v3 has enabled the Web site to expand into a more dynamic, feature-rich site.
"The customer feedback has been overwhelmingly good," says Lewis. "All of our customers have said they love the stability and reliability of our VPS v3. The customer feedback has been overwhelmingly good. We released the product and had an order within 10 minutes. We already have customers that are using it and that are excited about it."
