Go Daddy Auctions Domains by Mobile

By Justin Lee, theWHIR.com

June 19, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- As the overlap between mobile technology, domain names and Web hosting grows, along with the rise in popularity of .mobi domain names, businesses are quickly updating their Web sites so that users can more easily access them via their mobile devices.

Domain registrar and Web hosting provider Go Daddy (godaddy.com) is attempting to serve this trend by introducing mobile device-enabled participation in its domain name aftermarket service, The Domain Name Aftermarket (tdnam.com), allowing users to bid on and buy on domain names through cell phone and other mobile devices.

TDNAM members can access TDNAM.mobi via their cell phones or other handheld devices to monitor and complete auctions they have started and manage the names they are selling at TDNAM.com.

"We recognized that mobile computing is growing with special capabilities of smart and cell phones accessing the Internet," says Tim Ruiz, VP of corporate development and policy at Go Daddy, "especially in regards to TDNAM, where domain sellers and buyers who are on the move want to keep track of the names they're selling at any time and at any place. We just thought the natural step was to make it available to them over their mobile device so they wouldn't have to be sitting at home on their computers."

Members can browse TDNAM's more than 1.5 million domain names to find prices on domains recently offered for resale or allowed to expire, or ones that were previously unavailable. Some of the domains offer appraisals indicating their estimated value.

TDNAM.mobi currently offers three primary functions for users, enabling them to watch, bid on and sell domain names. The company plans to add functionality later this year, says Ruiz.

"The majority of our customers are domainers who trade domain names," says Ruiz. "However, we've tried to position TDNAM as an aftermarket site for just anyone interested in a domain name. It's becoming tougher as time goes by to find a good valuable domain name for business venture you might be interested in or a personal one for your own Web site."

More .mobi sites like TDNAM.mobi are being launched in order to offer services to customers via their cell phones. The .mobi sites are specially formatted for cell phone screens and bandwidths, allowing for a more user-friendly interface.

Hundreds of .mobi domain names are being registered on a daily basis at the Go Daddy Web site, and more than a half a million .mobi domains have been registered in 104 countries since its commercial launch last September, says the .mobi registry.

And while some domain name aftermarket companies currently offer their customers SMS messaging alerts, TDNAM is the first auction Web site of its kind to be offered in a .mobi format.

"[We hope] to make TDNAM the leading aftermarket site by addressing existing real needs, which is to be able to access your domain names and access your domain selling and buying from just about anywhere," says Ruiz.
