Yahoo Launches Unlimited Hosting

By Justin Lee, theWHIR.com

February 6, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Yahoo! Small Business (smallbusiness.yahoo.com) announced on Wednesday it is offering what it has termed the Web hosting industry's first unlimited service plan. Priced at $11.95 per month, the offer includes unlimited disk space, data transfer and email storage space.

Level 1 PCI DSS Certified Service Provider! DataPipe delivers the best network & support; top tier data centers; New York metro, Silicon Valley, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai. DataPipe - Personal Touch, Global Reach.

The solution enables small businesses to launch a new business or expand an existing one online. More importantly, business owners no longer have to concern themselves over the bandwidth and storage limits of their plan.

"To our knowledge, this is a first in the industry," says Guy Yalif, director of Web hosting products at Yahoo!. "We think this is important because it frees our small business hosting customers to focus on growing their business with unlimited room to grow online.

The unlimited hosting service includes simplified Web design tools that enable business owners to quickly create professional-looking websites, regardless of the level of technical knowledge they possess.

In addition to the website design tools, the service also includes a free domain name, 100 to 1,000 personalized email accounts, around the clock, toll-free customer support and a new 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

Yahoo! Small Business previously offered its more than 1.5 million customers three different plans with varying disk space, data transfer and email storage specifications, priced at $11.95, $19.95 and $39.95.

The company found the $11.95 hosting plan to be the most popular among customers, and therefore decided to keep that same pricing level intact when it switched over to the unlimited service, says Yalif.

"This latest improvement continues our focus on lead generation," says Yalif. "We find ourselves guided by the things our customers are telling us matter to them. While this is a competitive space, this was really was customer-driven."

The service also offers many significant enhancements, including discounts on marketing services, automatic submission of customers' websites to top search engines, one-step email setup, a lead-capturing tool that instantly alerts business owners via email whenever potential customers submit contact information or request service and expert guidance on how business owners can develop engaging website content.

These features all help Yahoo! Small Business customers to convert their website visitors into full-fledged customers, helping them effectively build their business.

Yahoo! Small Business decision to offer unlimited hosting service was a strategic move to simplify an otherwise complicated process and, ultimately, help small businesses achieve a strong online presence.

"We saw [our customers] on the path of becoming aware of hosting services to [buying the service]," says Yalif. "This was a stumbling block as they tried to figure cost per megabyte, how many gigabytes they need. We really simply wanted to remove this whole analysis and set of concerns, and help streamline their movement from thinking that this was a need to getting that lead."

COMMENTS

This is NOT the first time to see unlimited hosting. It's just that all the companies who tried it before were sued for false claims.

If you read the agreement as I have, you'll quickly understand that this is false advertising. It is only unlimited to the extent that you don't use the resources. Basically they have the right to decide how much of the "unlimited" you are allowed to have. Reminds me of the ads for MetroPCS where they joke about the competitors "UM-Limited" minutes. Sounds like Yahoo's plan is also UMLimited. I have a domain with them I was thinking about upgrading but this annoyed me so much that I am transferring. Anyway, once again you shouldn't believe what people say rather read the fineprint.

Franc, Yes, "unlimited" is a bit of a stretch. I think calling it "false advertising" might be a bit of a stretch too. Basically, they're putting limits on how quickly you can upload material. We editorialize this a little more in the latest issue of the print magazine. Check it out.
