I got your attention, and am not kidding. Parallels has great speakers, excellent presentations and is a forum to meet our fellow wizards. I am confident you won’t be disappointed, and this year you could be in for a great surprise. One you will never forget.
This story started on May 18, 2000. On my way out the door to ISPCON in Orlando, I decided to do a quick “world wide web” search, Lisa was in the driveway loudly reminding me we had a flight to catch…OK very loudly. I had this information itch, typed in the term ‘NASA’, then at a lightening 56k, a few minutes later I got a magic response. We were heading to Titusville, there was a shuttle launch scheduled for the next morning.
At precisely 6:11 a.m. the next morning the Shuttle Discovery lifted off (actual photo)…. there is nothing louder, there is nothing faster, nothing manmade that shakes the earth like 37 million horsepower, the equivalent to the output of 13 Hoover Dams staring you in the face for 60 seconds of thrill, followed by an hour of awe. Time for a smoke.
You may get lucky also. It just so happens that the Space Shuttle Discovery is scheduled to lift off on Thursday February 24, 2011 at 4:50 p.m….. the last Parallels presentation is scheduled to end at 4:40 —– Head for the terrace and look east. Orlando is a scant 35 miles from the launchpad.
I understand why Parallels did not add it to their nifty ‘Justification Toolkit’ which actually is quite serious, and intended for someone with a misguided bean-counter as their superior. You just can’t come out and say Disney, tans, party and then add the Shuttle Launch. Overkill.
Back to reality…the odds are against it lifting off on Thursday, I have seen 4 up close and know from experience, these can get scrubbed many times. So when making those flight reservations consider staying for a long weekend, I think you deserve it. Head for the beach, you may get lucky and see a launch up close in Titusville or Coco, you will find me here near the pool, you can’t get much closer.
Regardless this will be our last Discovery launch.
See you in Orlando— Later – Tom
