Parallels Summit 2009 – Day One Notes

There wasn’t a ton to report on from the first day at the Parallels Summit 2009. The sessions, keynotes, labs and the rest don’t really start until Tuesday, but folks had definitely been arriving (and registering) on Monday.

And I thought a short recap of the event might serve as a good opportunity to steer you in the direction of a few photos I just posted up onto Flickr (officially bringing into being the “Parallels Summit 2009” photo set on the WHIR Flickr feed, and on the WHIR photos page).

Despite the general dearth of conference-related activity, a few things did, undeniably take place:

A Golf Tournament

Parallels Golf Tournament

The company held a VIP Golf Tournament Monday at the Primm Valley golf course for partners and other assorted invited guests. It was a good time. I should probably point out that my foursome (which included Alejandro Del Castillo of Internetworks; Sean Charnock of SoftLayer; and Ruben Kruit, of Hosting Concepts) played valiantly despite my destructive influence. I am a terrible golfer of the sort of magnitude that has to be seen to be understood.

Just to illustrate that I am a pawn in a cruel game, fate saw fit to let me hit just enough better-than-acceptable shots to put my golfing career in a sort of fish or cut bait kind of situation. Talk to me in a year. I’m sure I’ll be an obsessive golfer.

Also, I got a sunburn. I’ll take it. It’s snowing at home.

A Party

Opening Night Reception at Eyecandy

I haven’t looked at the “what’s going on in the evenings” part of the program just yet, but this sort of thing is a sort of regular daily occurrence at a hosting conference. Monday evening, while the registration desk was open up on the third floor of the convention center, Parallels was hosting a party for attendees downstairs at the Eyecandy lounge, a flashy bar located in the center of the Mandalay Bay’s casino floor.

I ducked out a little early, but it was probably for the best, because here I am at 1:00 a.m. posting blog entries.
