Ohloh: PHP Eats Rails for Breakfast

Reference | in | by Isabel Wang

I read about on VC investor Brad Feld’s blog. Ohloh (which is hosted at Internap) is a research firm that focuses on open source projects. It collects metrics on source code, developers, infrastructure, etc.

Having indexed 3,000+ projects and 220 million lines of source code, Ohloh recently published an article comparing PHP, Ruby, Python and Perl. Take a look; interesting stuff.

The article even includes a PDF at the end with underlying data behind these charts.

Brad Feld’s perspective is different from Ohloh’s, by the way. He says “while PHP appears to be dominant today, the rapid growth in new projects in Ruby indicates that it is currently positioned as ‘the language of the next wave of applications.’ This is consistent with what I’m hearing and seeing from many new startups.” The bottom line? Your hosting plans ought to support both, and if your techs aren’t already familiar with Rails, they probably should be.
