Hostingcon 2009 – Stop Web-based Malware Attacks

(Dr. Neil Daswani – Dasient, Inc.) presented today a very interesting series of statistics relating to malware, its spread and how it really affects your hosting customers.

To me, the largest risk is the brand impact, and the usually large costs associated with not just remediation activities, but moreso the actions required to get you REINDEXED on Google, etc.  I have seen some of my customers been impacted by this, and had their google traffic drop to 0, and worse still, take sometimes weeks to get their site out of the filters.

Neil spent some time as well reviewing their solution, but to me, the most interesting statistic was that based on their analysis, less than 1% of the malware filters across the associated vendors (Google, Browser filters, etc.) actually matched up.  So, getting your site off of the filters takes A LOT of time, and worse still, has a reverb effect.  You may be listed here, but not there…until tomorrow, where the inverse may be true.

While most all agree that prevention is the best medicine, we all know that not everyone does this.  Dasient gives a good cost effective measure for notification services if you happen to have malware problems.
