Forgetting Email: A Social Mistake

By now, most hosting companies have their own Twitter and Facebook icons in prominent positions on their websites. However, it doesn’t mean that it will be this way forever. Everything new is whipped to a peak and eventually fades with a final verdict. That verdict is what each user must decide for themselves. The original techy crowd who found Twitter and reveled in its secrecy will now be scouts of the next social wave. While we’re all busy routing our brands to the ‘in’ crowd, there is always a ripple of change developing elsewhere. So if the attitude of Twitter has always been “follow”, isn’t it time for you to lead?

Being a leader does not always mean doing something entirely new. There has always been a loyal concoction patiently waiting on the backburner. Email. Email sends us alerts, comments, views, hits and tweets – email is mixed into everything. And even though we use email each day, it’s a communication often taken for granted. Maybe that’s because its operation is mostly perfected due to its old age, plus the comfort and familiarity, but we must never treat it as something less important than everything new.

As IT professionals, we are in the middle of every network imaginable, but we must remember that many of our clients are not interested in certain social sites and possibly never will be. From spam, unwanted messages and too much talk, many users leave Twitter after only a month. Luckily for hosts, we can ride the Twitter wave for a long time, since our customers are usually on the computer just as much as we are – their final verdict is a softer one. However, as companies and evolving brands, we have to be ready for any changes and stay one step ahead.

Throughout the fads and busy trends we’ll all experience, we can’t forget the simple effectiveness of an email to customers. From news to specials, and even opportunities to teach something new, email is still key in attracting attention with a method truly used by everyone. Email reigns as the first and last line of preferred communication for the largest percentage of your client base. With a “send-to-friend” option included in your next newsletter, it brings something a lot more important back to a “forward” and the rewards will bounce back to your company. Best of all, email is something that you do not have to worry about fading away.
