A new video narrated by Lost star Evangeline Lilly was released this week to explain NSA surveillance in the most basic terms in order to help a wider audience understand the implications of government spying. Produced by Fight for the Future and Demand Progress, and executive produced by Lilly, the video gives a background on the spying program using snippets from popular movies like the Big Lebowski and E.T., while encouraging people to come out to the Stop Watching Us rally, in Washington, D.C. next week.
The video does a good job of what it is trying to do – give people who may have heard of NSA, but not fully understood it, a bit of context, even if it skips over a lot of the nitty-gritty details.
“The NSA was hoping they could wait out the public’s attention by using esoteric buzzword-y jargon and trying to obfuscate the full scope of its nefarious dealings,” David Segal, executive director of Demand Progress said in a statement. “But that’s not what’s happening. Instead, the more people find out, the more upset they are. We made this video to give those people a weapon to educate and inspire others, pointing towards the Stop Watching Us rally in Washington, DC on October 26th.”
