While the exhibit hall is still being set up, there are a few little pockets of exhibitors hanging around in there already.
I stopped by The Planet’s booth earlier today, a notably subdued affair, considering its positioning across from the opulent FastServers undertaking, especially considering the relative size of The Planet’s business.

But I had a chance to speak to The Planet’s VP of marketing, Steve Kahan, and he described to me the objective the company had in coming to this particular event. The Planet wants new business from HostingCon, and in the direction the company is moving right now, that means he’s here seeking new reseller partners, to a great extent.
Driving that plan, he says, is faith that The Planet operates the best infrastructure in the dedicated hosting business. In order to convince resellers of that, the company is offering to beat any price for any server configuration the company offers. This is a new deal the company has brought to HostingCon.
He says The Planet will provide a customer 10 percent better than any price they bring in. And will waive the setup fees for the first month.
According to Kahan, part of The Planet’s plan is bringing shared hosting resellers upstream to where they can offer dedicated servers.
Basically, he says, the barriers to switching to The Planet (and experiencing its infrastructure), or expanding into dedicated hosting is cost; the cost of new equipment and the cost of installation and setup.
The plan here, he says, is to eliminate that cost with its 10-percent-better deal, and eliminate the set-up fees with it’s first-month-free offering.
Obviously there’s a certain amount of similarity required of the server setup. And I don’t pretend to know the exact details of the deal. But if I were a reseller looking for a deal on dedicated servers, I’d consider getting in touch with The Planet to find out a bit more about this deal.
