Register for Next Week's UltraDNS Webinar

By Liam Eagle on November 05, 2009

Thought I’d give you an update on an upcoming WHIR webinar, as well as a bit of urging to get you to register for the event.

We’re planning to up the frequency of our webinar schedule in the coming months. I know we’ve only done a few up to this point, so “more frequent” could mean anything, but we’re specifically planning to host two free-to-attend informative sessions every month.

That new webinar schedule begins next Tuesday, November 10, at 12:00 noon (eastern time) with a sponsored session from managed DNS provider Neustar, operator of the UltraDNS portfolio of DNS products, entitled “Traffic Management in the Cloud - Changing the Economics of Internet Infrastructure Optimization.”

I just ran through the session with presenters James Willett, senior director of professional services and sales engineering, and Warren Howells, VP of strategic marketing, and can vouch that the presentation is an enlightening discussion of the power of a managed DNS service to benefit an Internet application – in terms of price, performance, capabilities and the complexity of the job – versus a DNS or traffic management system built and managed in-house.

More specifically, James Willett runs through six or seven case studies of enterprises using managed DNS in different interesting ways. It’s a great overview of the possibilities available with a managed DNS service, and helps produce an understanding of how an investment in traffic management can greatly reduce the load on other infrastructure, and often the investment required in that area.

By registering now, you’ll have the obvious benefit of being able to attend the event and access the insight. You’ll also be able to submit questions and have them answered in the course of the webinar. You’ll also create the contacts at Neustar, and be able to follow up with them in whatever way you need to. Everyone who registers for the event will also receive a follow-up from Neustar, with some additional research statistics on ROI for managed DNS as applied to several case scenarios.

I want to stress the fact that the participatory aspect of the webinar is its great strength – that is, this is your opportunity to find out anything you might want to know about UltraDNS by going straight to the source. I’m looking forward to fielding your questions and putting them to the presenters.

The webinar, once again, is Tuesday, November 10, at 12:00 noon Eastern Time. You can register now by visiting the webinar signup page.

See you there.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
