Cloud Infrastructure – What to Look For

There is little doubt that cloud computing and cloud hosting are seeing dramatic increases in usage as the services become more attractive to organizations of all sizes. What was once seen as a niche for companies or individuals looking to offset some data storage, cloud is now taking center stage within the IT landscape as a means to convert costly IT capital expenditures to operational expenditures. This alone is a primary motivating factor in the minds of many IT leaders and executives seeking to capture additional savings. However, something that can be overlooked in the movement to the cloud is the underlying technologies and performance of systems that form the infrastructure of a virtualized solution.nAs can often be the case with new technologies, there is a slight aura of mystery surrounding cloud. Moreover, there are a number of solution providers inadvertently contributing to the mystery by not publicly acknowledging the technologies behind their cloud. So how do businesses or entrepreneurs decide or even know if a cloud solution will match up with their requirements?nFor starters, it is important to determine what any given platform is working with or based upon, its cloud infrastructure if you will. Think of this as checking under the hood or kicking the tires when looking for a vehicle. If you know the cloud platform is built using the best virtualization technologies and supporting infrastructure, there is a degree of certainty it will be able to efficiently meet your requirements. If it is not readily apparent what technologies the solution is using, be sure to ask.nAnother aspect to consider is where the cloud solution is physically located. At first, this can come across as a strange concept, since cloud services by nature are based on not owning hardware or infrastructure. However, the stack of equipment running the virtualized services still must reside someplace. Very similar to what is seen as critical in the more conventional web hosting world, a secure facility and safe environment are important to cloud, as well.nFrom here the aspects of the right cloud solution for you will really be based on the functionalities and usability of it, and the degree to which you incorporate virtualization. A number of good services and solutions exist, and much like anything else, what is right for one may not be right for another.
