Using Your Host's Video Tutorials

Using Your Host's Video TutorialsAlthough many Web hosting providers have a detailed FAQ section or an attentive support system in place in case a new customer has trouble with tasks like using his control panel, editing and formatting the text in his site builder or transferring his domain name to a different registrar, some Web hosts offer video tutorials designed to help new customers build and navigate their websites.
Web hosting tutorials from companies like DemoWolf (demowolf.com) or DemoDemo (demodemo.com) help Web hosts provide visual learning tools for customers to refer to when in doubt about how to use a certain application.
Both DemoDemo and DemoWolf offer flash-based video tutorials that open in your browser and take you through an application step-by-step with captions explaining the basics in layman's terms. It's useful to note that although each tutorial is simple, that doesn't mean the application or feature in question isn't explained in great detail as you'll sometimes as many as 10 tutorials going over the individual elements of an application.
The videos come in a user-friendly player that you can start or pause at any point so its easier to follow, as well as fast-forward or rewind if you want to listen to a step again. They provide a convenient way for you to follow along with the steps while trying your hand at the application.
On top of the video tutorials, DemoWolf also provides audio tutorials, which are essentially the video tutorials with each step read out-loud to the viewer, which can be more or less effective depending on how much of an aural learner you are. More and more Web hosts are offering these on their sites as a way to help customers use their applications.
For a customer completely new to the world of Web hosting and setting up a website, these tutorials can often be more convenient than sending in a support ticket to your hosting provider as they are available around-the-clock and can be by your side for hours as you teach yourself how to navigate your control panel, FTP or any other aspect you're not sure about. If your hosting provider offers these tutorials but they aren't working for you, you may need to download the latest version of Flash. If that still doesn't work, then contact your hosting provider.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
