Link Building’s Importance for E-Commerce Storeowners

ARTICLE CATEGORIES

Achieving a high page ranking from search engines is extremely valuable for anyone with an e-commerce site. One of the best and easiest ways to rank high in search results is by building links to your site. Having a high page rank is a major key to the success of your business.

A good way to start building links is to make lists.  For example, make a “Top 10” or “101 Reasons To” type of list and publish it online.  People can’t help but link to these types of lists and are read often.

Another important link building strategy is to take advantage of local and industry professional associations.  You can easily get listed with your local Chamber of Commerce or the Better Business Bureau.  Also, consider associations in your industry.

Social networking and blogging are two huge areas for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and link building.  When using these social media and blog sites, make sure that you are not being a spammer and that while marketing your product or service, you are also contributing something of value.  Make comments on popular blogs, profiles, join groups, make fan pages and do whatever it takes to push your site to the consumer.

Take the time to find 5-10 good blogs in your area of business and leave meaningful, contributing comments on related topics.  Again, make sure you are not simply spamming and promoting your business but adding something important or helpful to the conversation.  Try to be the first to comment because generally people only read the first few comments on a blog post.

Building links can be a time-consuming process but it is one of the most beneficial practices you can do for your online business or store.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
